Biodiesel refers to a vegetable oil- or animal fat-based diesel fuel consisting of long-chain alkyl (methyl, propyl or ethyl) esters. Biodiesel is typically made by chemically reacting lipids (e.g., vegetable oil, animal fat (tallow)) with an alcohol producing fatty acid esters. Biodiesel is meant to be used in standard diesel engines and is thus distinct from the vegetable and waste oils used to fuel converted diesel engines. Biodiesel can be used alone, or blended with petrodiesel. Biodiesel can also be used as a low carbon alternative to heating oil. B20 means the diesel contains 20% biodiesel (actually it contains 15% to 22%) and the rest good old diesel from petroleum. The reason for this is that B100 (1005 pure biodiesel) turns to a jelly at 40 to 50 F and your car engine will stop cold (sorry for the pun). Running un processed vegetable oils is very tricky as they will turn to a Solid and again, your car stops. Biodiesel cost right at $4.50 US to make, even clubs and coops can't make it any cheaper. So blend in some 15% at $4.50 plus 85% at $2.00 and you get $2.35 less a tax credit of $.15. add $.50 per gallon tax and bingo, biodiesel cost $2.70 versus $2.50 per gallon, or just about 10% higher for B20.
